Joey Castro

Ibuki’s instructor, Joey Castro, is an energetic professional who has dedicated his life and being to Karate-do. With 32 years of experience in various styles of martial arts and 22 years of experience in martial arts instruction, Joey is dedicated to providing a fun, memorable, and competitive environment for all his students.

This blend of personal competitive experience combined with his expertise as an instructor went on to produce several students who are national champions in accordance to AAU Karate, NASKA, WKC, and WKU World Champions.

Additional qualifications
  • 5th Degree Black Belt under the guidance of Juan Perez Shihan
  • Well studied and specialized in Shito Ryu, Goju Ryu, Shotokan, & Ryuie Ryu Forms.
  • Skillful weapon practitioner (bo, sai, kama, tonfa, eku-bo, jo, cane, nunchuku, tekko, escrima, tinbe/rochin 
  • Previous AAU National Champion in Weapons, Kata, and Kumite 
  • Previous USANKF National Champion in Kata 
  • 4x NBL world champion in Traditional Japanese Forms and Traditional Weapons
  • 6x Naska World Champion in Japanese/Okinawan forms
  • 2018 AKA WARRIOR CUP Overall forms winner
  • 3x silver medalist at ISKA World Championship hosted and televised on ESPN
  • Quebec Open Overall Forms Grand Champion 2017
  • Previous WKC National Champion in Kata & Kobudo
  • Member of KTOC international competition team 2016-2021

Our Philosophy

IBUKI translates to “breath” in English. In karate, “ibuki” is a type of powerful breathing. The combination of characters that form Ibuki 息吹 means “inner strength”.

At Ibuki Martial Arts, we apply the concept of breathing and power into our karate. Quite literally, we  “breathe life into” our karate to access our inner strength.

 

The Cloud Hands crest symbolizes the top kata in martial arts. It doubles as a visual representation of Ibuki.
